Is the pine beam as reliable as the hardwood beam?

Yes, if anything the pine beam mechanical properties are better known since the pine feedstock is machine stressed graded as opposed to visually graded hardwood.

Wouldn’t you have problems with the durability of pine laminated beams?

Depends, if you have an untreated slash pine laminated beam, it has the same durability as the hardwood Tasmanian Oak beams, that is durability class 4. However, with the pine laminated beams you have the option to LOSP treat them for durability and termite resistant, whereas the GL18 beams you don’t have that option.

If you use a Hyne Beam 17C wouldn’t the size blow out relative to a hardwood beam?

Not necessarily. In most applications, you will find only a small increase in section size relative to the hardwood beam eg. a 230 x 65 Hyne Beam 17C will do the same job and better than a 215 x 65 GL18C.
